Uh, Oh….The Holidays Are Coming!

Author: Venus Dean-Bullinger    Posted: October 30, 2015

How exciting,

Tis the season to be jolly. Fa’ La’ La’ La’ La..La’,La’ La La!  Tis also the season to watch what we eat.

Although health advice has focused on saturated fats from high-fat animal foods, many people take that advice to mean all fats are bad.  Choosing in their stead an array of reduced-fat and fat-free foods rich in carbohydrates… from crackers to sweetened yogurts. They especially increased their consumption of two kinds of carbohydrates, refined starches and sugars that have helped to spawn the current epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.  It’s really important to distinguish between healthy fats and bad fats, healthy carbs and bad carbs.  During the holidays, we need to try and stay away from saturated and animal fats (they raise our cholesterol) which we do not want to do.  But, we can eat olive oils, avocado and nut oils that are beneficial to our cardiovascular health and body weight.  We all know, as it gets colder and darker earlier outside, that comfort and holiday foods start to call all of our names.  Well, let’s try a few things to help us control those impulses:

  1. Try to drink more water throughout the day (it makes us feel more full so we won’t pick up that extra cookie)
  2. Take a quick walk on your brake (even around the parking garage, so we don’t get wet)
  3. Look on line for an alternative to your favorite dish like mashed potatoes (we use mashed cauliflower sometimes…the kids love it!)
  4. And last but not least it says on line that LAUGHTER is a great way to boost your heart rate

So, to recap…..we are all going to want to over eat this holiday season, so we need to try and be aware of our caloric intake.

And, let’s help each other take one less piece of pie this Thanksgiving!

From The Blog - Am I Contagious?

Am I Contagious? This is always the question at our office when someone isn’t feeling 100%. I found a great little chart from Healthline.  It contains great info on when to stay home. It’s going to be especially useful for my family and I hope it is for yours, too. I live in a household with 4 teenagers, my husband, and a dog. We’ve been in the process of moving and in the midst of […]
